Girl Scout Program Opportunities

What do Girl Scouts do? The answer is almost anything a girl would like to do!

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is girl-driven, reflecting the ever-changing needs and interests of participating girls. It provides girls ages 5-17 with a wide variety of leadership opportunities and learning opportunities. (Scroll down to read more about the GSLE,)

Pathways

Girl Scout pathways are the ways girls and adults participate in and experience Girl Scouting. There are six Girl Scout pathways.
  1. Camp: Girls participate in day or resident camps with a focus on the out-of-doors and/or environmental education.
  2. Events: Girls participate in events (ie: career day)
  3. Special Interest: Girls participate in a series of programs with the same group of girls relating to a specific theme or purpose (ie: high-adventure teen group, completion of "It's Your World-Change It!" journey over a six-week period.)
  4. Travel: Girls plan, earn money, prepare and participate in regional, national and international trips.
  5. Troops: Girls participate in a series of programs with the same group of girls over the course of an academic year.
  6. Virtual: Girls participate in interactive, high-quality activities in a safe, secure, online environment supplemented by live events.

Focus Areas

There are many opportunities available in several different focus areas.

Outdoor Experience: Through Girl Scouting, girls see the earth as their home. Whether they're learning about endangered wildlife, developing creative recycling projects, or working toward age-level awards, girls focus on care, conservation, and responsibility and ensure the safety of our planet for future generations.

Health and Wellness: Every girl deserves to live a healthy life—emotionally and physically. Whether they're working toward age-level awards or talking with leaders or advisors about issues of concern in their lives or in their communities, Girl Scouts build the skills they need to keep their bodies healthy, their minds engaged, and their spirits alive.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM):
Girls push boundaries, test limits, and look at the world around them with inquisitive eyes. They're natural scientists! Girl Scouts introduces girls of every age to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities that are relevant to everyday life.

The Arts: Girls see infinite possibilities—and participation in the arts enables them to express what they see. Girl Scouts encourages girls to view the world through the eyes of discovery by helping them develop their creativity, follow their instincts, and hone their communication skills. From photography to playwriting and acting, activities in the visual, performing, and language arts encourage girls to trust themselves and create whatever they dream up!

Girl Scout Leadership Experience

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience engages girls in discovering self, connecting with others, and taking action to make the world a better place. Discover, Connect, and Take Action are the three keys to Leadership.

  • Discover: Girls understand themselves and their values and use their knowledge and skills to explore the world.
  • Connect: Girls care about, inspire, and team with others locally and globally.
  • Take Action: Girls act to make the world a better place.

In Girl Scouting, Discover + Connect + Take Action=Leadership. All Girl Scout experiences are intentionally designed to tie to one or more of the 15 national leadership outcomes, or benefits, categorized under the three keys to leadership.

Download (PDF, 7.98MB) Transforming Leadership in English or Spanish today to see the Discover-Connect-Take Action framework of the 15 outcomes and understand how girls will benefit from the Girl Leadership Experience today and tomorrow.

For more information about the research, email the Girl Scout Research Institute or call (800) GSUSA 4 U.

Please Note: These three keys to leadership replace Girl Scouting's "four program goals" and the 4Bs from STUDIO 2B.
