Do you love canoeing, kayaking, or rowboats? Do you want to take your
troop or fellow Girl Scouts out on Camp Archbalds Lake? Then join us
for a two-day training at Camp Archbald to gain your Small Craft
Safety Training!
Participants have the option to stay
overnight, for free, in Treetops or the Lodge!
Small
Craft Safety Training (SCST) is for adults who are interested in
taking their girls boating (canoeing, kayaking, rowboating) at Camp
Archbald. This training will take place over two days and consists of
both classroom and in-water components.
Participants will
be required to pass a swim and basic boating test to take part in this
course.
-Swim Test: You should be prepared to tread water or
float for 1 minute without a life jacket, swim any stroke for 25 yards
without a life jacket and swim any stroke for 15 yards with a life
jacket.
-Boating Test: You should be able to launch/dock
a canoe and kayak, show basic boating skills such as; moving forward,
backward, turning, and stopping. Participants will learn and practice
self-rescues (falling overboard and reentering your boat) and rescuing
others during the program
This training covers the
following topics: water safety guidelines, preventing accidents and
injuries, supervision and emergency preparedness, introduction to
basic water rescue, self-rescues, rescuing others, and emergency care.
Participants will practice skills in boats and demonstrate these
skills to the instructor.
Meals are not provided.
Participants will be responsible for bringing their own meals and a
water bottle. We do have a refrigerator and microwave available.
Please bring a swimsuit, towel, appropriate footwear, and extra
clothes.
This training fulfills Safety Activity
Checkpoints for leading girls in canoeing, kayaking, and rowboating
and results in site training that is valid for 2 years. This training
is not applicable to non-GSHPA properties and does not result in certification.
